British Columbia boasts excellent educational opportunities for any level of education.
School children can attend public school from age 5 to 19, from kindergarten to the twelfth grade. Local school boards administer the education system. Approximately 1,800 schools exist in the province; about 350 are private schools.. Additionally, parents can use distance learning or home schooling for children’s education.
British Columbia is home to remarkable universities. The University of British Columbia (UBC) at Vancouver is ranked among the world’s best universities. Over 45,000 students are enrolled in UBC. Satellite campuses include UBC Okanagan in Kelowna, UBC Robson Square in downtown Vancouver, and the Great Northern Way campus in Vancouver. Simon Fraser University (SFU) at Burnaby hosts over 25,000 students and more than 700 tenure-track faculty. Satellite campuses for SFU include SFU at Surrey and Vancouver. The University of Victoria at Victoria enrolls nearly 20,000 students, and boasts western Canada’s largest university co-operative education program, with over 40 academic programs in which to gain work experience. Additional universities include the University of Northern British Columbia, in Prince George, and Royal Roads University in Victoria, among others.
British Columbia also hosts 11 community colleges. Among these are Vancouver Community College, in Vancouver; Capilano College in North Vancouver; Northwest Community College, based in Terrace and with 6 campuses; and Thompson Rivers University, based in Kamloops.
Private colleges in the Pacific Province include Ashton College in Vancouver; Coquitlam College in Coquitlam; and Winston College in Burnaby, among several others.
