British Columbia BioEvolution Poster Released

June 30, 2008, SEATTLE, WASHINGTON – "British Columbia BioEvolution," a genealogy poster that that illustrates the "technology origins" of nearly 60 biotechnology, and medical device firms that comprise the life science industry in the province of British Columbia, was unveiled today by Info.Resource, Inc., owner and publisher of www.BritishColumbiaLifeScience.com.

"British Columbia is a rapidly growing life science center and I believe that industry, academia and government need to understand the technology origins that led to this national position so that we can continue to provide stewardship for further growth and economic development," said Phil Ness, President & CEO of Info.Resource.

The British Columbia BioEvolution poster is based on phone interviews with company and non-profit organization representatives, and depicts the origins of a company's "founding" technology and technology licensing relationships with the province's universities and non-profit research organizations -- the economic engines supporting innovative research and development. Other survey findings include:

  • More than ninety percent of the British Columbia industry is located in the Greater Vancouver Metropolitan Area;
  • Thirty-four British Columbia companies are publicly traded on the NASDAQ, New York or Toronto Stock Exchanges, or on an Over the Counter securities market;
  • Forty percent of the life science companies in British Columbia have been established since 2000:
  • Notably, thirty-nine percent are founded on technology developed at the University of British Columbia (UBC), University of Victoria (UVic), and Simon Fraser University (SFU).

The British Columbia BioEvolution poster is sponsored by Alexandria Real Estate, Amgen, BioLife Solutions, Economic Development For Central Oregon, Ikaria, Lease Crutcher Lewis, Merck & Co., Ratner BioMedical, SAB Architects, Technical Safety Services, among others.
